Is India The Next Aircraft Carrier Superpower ?
A new aircraft carrier arms race is underway – and it doesn’t involve the United States or even a European power.
Rather, India’s first domestically-build carrier, INS Vikrant, is nearing completion and could soon begin sea trials. This comes as the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) currently has two carriers in service while a third is under construction, and other Asian nations are looking to also build flattops.
Aircraft carriers remain symbols of prestige and power for the navies across the world, so it isn’t surprising that New Delhi would seek to enlarge its carrier fleet, especially as China has upped its game.
The Indian Navy already operates the Russian-built INS Vikramaditya, and could soon join the proverbial “league of nations” that is able to operate more than a single carrier. Two carriers could also be especially vital to New Delhi should it find itself in a war with China or Pakistan.
India is not a newcomer in carrier building, Among the Asian countries, the Indian Navy has the most experience in terms of naval aviation.
BlueBird Aero Systems Unveils Upgraded Version of its ThunderB VTOL UAV, Could be a Game Changer for India at LAC
Tel Aviv. Israeli company BlueBird Aero Systems has unveiled the upgraded version of its ThunderB VTOL UAV. According to the company this improved version can perform more complex missions.
Itai Toren, the company’s VP business development and sales told Raksha Anirveda that the upgraded version has better aerodynamic qualities that makes the systems more efficient .”The new version is capable of carrying a 8 kg payload, which enables to fit it with a greater variety of sensors”. MTOW of the new version is 35 kg. Toren said that the new version of the ThunderB VTOL UAV has been already supplied to some customers.
The ThunderB-VTOL, a hybrid fixed wing UAV, offers high operational flexibility and combine the advantages of a fixed wing UAV with the benefits of a multi-copter.
Fixed wing advantages – Extended endurance, high speed operation in harsh environments, large area coverage and ability to glide to safe landing. Multi-copter advantages – Ability to take off and land in small limited areas (such as on ships in mid-sea for maritime operations, small forest clearings, urban rooftops, etc.) and soft and accurate landing. The ThunderB-VTOL delivers superior operational capabilities.
China’s Type 15 Light Tank : Built To Fight India In A War ?
It’s a fact that tanks are by nature, big heavy beasts. Take for example the M1 Abrams, the United States’ main battle tank. Since its introduction into American service in the early 1980s, the venerable Abrams has ballooned in size to the point where it maybe is too heavy to quickly get to the front lines.
Beijing is also aware of the danger of excessive tank weight, though for a slightly different reason.
Like the Arjun tanks, China’s Type 99 and Type 96 main battle tanks are heavy, though they don’t tip the scales quite as much as their India counterpart. Still, their combat effectiveness could suffer in conditions where nimbleness — made possible by lower weight and therefore lower ground pressure — would be needed. Think high-altitude mountain environments.
In these types of environments, the smaller Type 15 tank would fill in for China’s Type 99 and Type 96 tanks. The Type 15 is by comparison, diminutive. Weighing in at around 35 tons.
Sweden To Receive First Delivery of World’s Most Advanced Air Defense Missile
Lockheed Martin successfully delivered Sweden’s first Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptors in April, providing the country with the world’s most advanced air defense missile that uses Hit-to-Kill technology to defend against incoming threats.
“By choosing PAC-3 MSE for missile defense, our customers around the world know they have the combat-proven technology needed to stay ahead of rapidly-evolving threats,” said Brenda Davidson, vice president, PAC-3 Programs, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “We’re proud to deliver this advanced capability to Sweden so they can best defend their armed forces, citizens and infrastructure.”
U.S. and Swedish officials formalized an agreement for Sweden to purchase PAC-3 MSE interceptors and related support equipment in August 2018.
The PAC-3 MSE’s revolutionary two-pulse solid rocket motor provides increased performance in both altitude and range while employing the same proven Hit-to-Kill technology that the PAC-3 CRI missile uniquely brings to the Patriot system.
Mazagon Dock to deliver INS Visakhapatnam by Oct, INS Vela by March to Indian Navy
INS Visakhapatnam is undergoing sea trials and three other destroyers are under various stages of development by the state-run company, which had to revise the delivery schedule because COVID-19 disrupted operations.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDSL) will deliver the first of the four stealth guided missile destroyers to the Indian Navy by October and a Scorpene-class submarine by the end of the fiscal year.
The state-run company under the defence ministry, which has an order book of nearly Rs 50,000 crore, will hand over Visakhapatnam-class (Project 15B) destroyer INS Visakhapatnam to the navy in the next 3-4 months.
INS Visakhapatnam is the first of the four destroyers MDSL is building at its site in Mumbai which is also one of the largest that the Indian Navy will possess.
While INS Visakhapatnam is currently undergoing sea trials, three other destroyers of the same class – INS Mormugao, INS Imphal, INS Porbandar – are under various stages of development at MDSL.
This will be followed by the handing over of the fourth Scorpene-class submarine INS Vela by the end of the current financial year. Three such submarines have been delivered to the Indian Navy, the last one being INS Karanj in February this year.
